Marco Melandri had been linked to a Kawasaki ride but, should he split from Ducati, the Italian - whose results have been only marginally better than West's so far this year - may be forced to sit out the rest of the season. Kawasaki has also made clear that outside funding will be needed to run a third ZX-RR.

The Czech Republic Grand Prix takes place on August 17.
