FIM and Dorna acknowledge Italian world champions.

The FIM and Dorna honoured all the past Italian winners of the 500cc/MotoGP World Championship at an event at Misano on Friday.

As part of MotoGP's celebrations marking the 60th season of grand prix racing, 'MotoGP Champions Towers' were presented at the San Marino Grand Prix, marking the achievements of the all the Italian former premier-class world champions.

Mr. Vito Ippolito (FIM President) and Mr. Carmelo Ezpeleta (CEO Dorna Sports) presented the awards to Valentino Rossi (five-time MotoGP champion from 2001-2005), Franco Uncini (1982), Marco Lucchinelli (1981) and Giacomo Agostini (eight-time MotoGP champion, 1966-1972 and 1975).

"I am very honoured to be in the presence of these great champions and it is very special to have them all gathered together," said Ippolito. "Italy has had phenomenal success in producing world champions and it is a great pleasure to present these trophies to them on behalf of the FIM and Dorna."

Giulio Liberati received the award on behalf of his grandfather Libero Liberati who was world champion in 1957, while the family of Umberto Masetti, the first Italian MotoGP winner (1950 and 1953) were unable to attend and will receive his award by special delivery.
