Tetsuya Harada maintained the pressure on World Championship leader Daijiro Katoh with provisional pole position at Estoril. The Japanese ended up 0.124 seconds ahead of Katoh, who leads Harada by 35 points in the title chase.

"We thought this race would be very tough because I think the Honda has a bit of an advantage at tight and bumpy circuits like this," said Harada. "We're working very hard to close that gap but although we're ahead, this is only Friday. I think we can expect more from Katoh tomorrow, and especially on Sunday. But I won't be giving up, we'll try everything to beat him again."

Harada's team-mates Marco Melandri, who's beaten Katoh at the last two races, and Jeremy McWilliams complete the provisional front row.
