World 250 series leader Daijiro Katoh was beaten for pole at Estoril today by title rival Tetsuya Harada. Harada is on a charge at the moment, having won at Brno two weeks ago, where Katoh was forced down to third by Harada's team-mate Marco Melandri.

"This race will be very important and it's going to be a lot more difficult than qualifying," said Harada. "We have a good set-up but we'll have to wait and see how we compare against the Honda over full-race distance around this kind of track. I hope that my team-mates will be able to help me again, as they did at Brno."

Katoh ended the session 0.212 seconds off Harada, with Jeremy McWilliams third, despite a big crash late in the session. Aprilia privateer Fonsi Nieto completes row one with Melandri fifth.
