Jimmie Johnson revitalised his season by rounding out the top five, while Tony Stewart had to be content with sixth after winning each of last two events, including the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Mark Martin and Casey Mears completed the top ten, although only the #07 driver made any advance in his claim to a place in the Chase.
Just four cars retired in a largely uneventful race, with Ward Burton, Dale Jarrett, David Reutimann and Jamie McMurray those sidelined, while Ricky Rudd produced Ford's best result in an event dominated by Dodge and Chevrolet, taking 13th spot in the #88 Combos car. Dave Blaney was again the leading Toyota, but trailed in a lap down in 20th.
The race ran without Robby Gordon, who was suspended by NASCAR after an incident in the inaugural Busch Series race in Montreal on Saturday night. Although he flew to Pocono for the Cup race, Gordon had to watch as PJ Jones took the wheel of his #7 MAPEI/Menards Ford, steering it to 37th place. Additional action could be levied against Gordon this week.
