Biffle wins amid chaotic scenes in Kansas

Sunday, 30th September 2007

Greg Biffle takes his first win of 2007 in delayed and shortened Kansas race despite running out of fuel before taking the chequered flag.

Stewart's problems didn't end with the puncture for although the closely following Tony Raines was able to avoid the listing #20 machine, the next car in line, that of Kurt Busch, wasn't. Busch's punt cannoned Stewart broadside into the outside wall leaving Carl Edwards nowhere to go and in the blink of an eye two more title hopefuls had their cars reduced to junk.

After some of the leaders chose to top up with fuel and new tyres under the subsequent caution, the race resumed with 23 laps remaining with several of the front runners, Biffle included, gambling on making it to the end without another stop. As poor light continued to be an increasing factor Biffle clung on to the lead as those with fresh tyres scythed their way towards him. Leading the chasers was home crowd favourite Clint Bowyer and the astounding Johnson, who had worked his way to the front from 43rd starting position.

Sadly for the fans there would be no grandstand finish because with four of the scheduled laps to go Juan Montoya cut a tyre and brought out the caution flags again and with darkness now fully upon the circuit NASCAR took the decision to abandon proceedings behind the safety car.

But the controversy wasn't over yet for Biffle still had to cross the finish line and take the chequered flag and as the field came off turn four for the final time Biffle's car spluttered as the last drops of fuel in his tank drained away forcing Biffle to coast across the line.

As Biffle's pace slowed on the apron of the track, several cars who were able to maintain the speed of the pace car overtook Biffle before the finish line and with Bowyer and Johnson both believing they had gained a position NASCAR moved quickly to state that Biffle was able to maintain a reasonable speed and that therefore he was the winner.
