As Harvick and Montoya sorted themselves out off the track, the officials had thrown the red flag to those cars still on track as a lot of fluid and grease had being laid down in the first corner. During the delay there was the bizarre site of a fan leaping over the fencing and running to the side of Kenseth's car cap in hand wanting an autograph, a situation that brought much merriment to many of Kenseth's fellow drivers and crews.
After the delay the field were unleashed again on lap 77 with Gordon now leading Hamlin, Stewart and Edwards who earlier had engaged in a fantastic three way dice that saw all three cutting across the grass in the bus stop chicane. The fight for second resumed quickly with Stewart passing his teammate with a stunning move around the outside of the penultimate corner shortly before the caution flag was out again as Kurt Busch pushed PJ Jones into the bus stop chicane gravel.
This final delay gave Stewart eight laps to try and take the win away from Gordon but as Hamlin and Edwards continued to scrap over third, with Edwards taking the place with an outside move in turn one, Gordon surged clear and seemed to have the race in the bag…until the start of lap 88.
Perhaps surprised by the sight of Gordon spinning Stewart backed off slightly as he moved into first place which allowed Edwards to pull up right behind the leader as they crossed the line to take the white flag. However the drama wasn't finish yet as Edwards overcooked things going into the penultimate corner on the final lap and took to the gravel, allowing Hamlin to slip through into second place to complete an unlikely 1-2 finish for the Joe Gibbs team.
