If the fans thought the race would settle down following that crash they were mistaken as Casey Mears clashed with Johnny Sauter in turn three on lap 53 with Elliott Sadler and Petty again having nowhere to go and ploughing in to the wreckage. Just seven laps later the yellows were out again as Johnson's damaged bodywork cut a tyre going into turn three, sending the defending Brickyard winner into the outside wall with enough force to rupture a fuel line and cause a fire from which Johnson emerged unscathed.
Following Johnson's demise there was a relative lull with Dale Earnhardt Jr's lap 135 engine failure the next notable caution, not least because Earnhardt Jr had the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet in fourth place at the time having led a number of laps in the early going.
The high rate of attrition allowed many of the lower order teams to have a rare day in the sun, especially Blaney and Ward Burton, who scored his and Morgan McClure's best result of the year with a 14th place effort.
