On lap 115 Sterling Marlin cut a tyre and clouted the wall to bring out the fifth caution period and the majority of the field chose to pit again. Knowing that they weren't in their final fuel window yet the Busch brothers, Johnson and Yeley stayed out. Kyle Busch, whose car seemed to be on the brink of spinning out for much of the race, finally got passed his brother to take the lead only to see it disappear when Bobby Labonte and Montoya got together coming off turn two on lap 131 sending some, but critically not all, the leaders to pit road.
Casey Mears, a patched up Kahne and David Gilliland were among those who chose not to pit but whereas Kahne and Gilliland were soon swallowed up by those on fresher rubber Mears held firm at the front until Bowyer completed his recovery drive when he retook the lead on lap 141.
Gilliland then spun coming off turn two on lap 143 to bring out the caution flag yet again but the leaders stayed out with Bowyer and Mears leading Johnson, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch. The race restarted on lap 147 and Mears regained the lead with help from his Hendrick teammate Johnson but when Joe Nemechek and Brian Vickers crashed in turn one on lap 150 it was Gordon who had his nose in front
The #24 Hendrick Chevrolet led the field to the final restart with eight laps remaining and had teammates in the form of Mears, Johnson and Busch for company. McMurray took the restart in third with Roush-Fenway teammates Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle in close company and the race looked set for a superb showdown.
The closing laps didn't disappoint as Kyle Busch swung into the lead with five to go only to have McMurray sweep by on the high line thanks to a push from Busch's soon to be ex-teammate Gordon. The top two stayed side by for virtually the entire final four laps with Busch edging ahead on the low line.
