Friday's final on-track activity for the Nextel Cup Series was the traditional Happy Hour practice session before the teams put their cars away for Saturday night's Bank of America 500 and while much of the attention was focused on the Championship hopefuls four of the five fastest times in the final session went to non Chase drivers.
Fastest of all was Kansas winner Greg Biffle in the #16 Roush-Fenway Racing Ford with Martin Truex Jr the only title contender in the top five with second fastest time. Behind Truex Jr was his DEI teammate Paul Menard followed by Bud Pole winner Ryan Newman and the second non-title contending Roush-Fenway entry of Jamie McMurray.
The rest of the top twelve was filled out by Chase drivers with Tony Stewart sixth, Carl Edwards seventh, pre-race favourite Jimmie Johnson eighth and Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch rounding out the top 12.
Of the remaining title hopefuls Clint Bowyer was 17th fastest while Kevin Harvick and his RCR teammate Jeff Burton continued to struggle in 24th and 26th places respectively.
Worst off of all though was current points leader Jeff Gordon who could only manage 36th fastest time.
