Richard Childress Racing's Jeff Burton avoided numerous accidents to drive from 43rd to first and win Friday night's Dollar General 300 Busch Series race at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Burton watched as many of the race leaders and pre-race favourites were taken out in accidents to claim his fourth Busch win of the year comfortably clear of Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Busch Series rookie Aric Almirola was the only non Cup Series interloper in the top eight in fourth place with Denny Hamlin, David Ragan, Robby Gordon and Clint Bowyer completing yet another Nextel Cup rout at the head of the field.
Kelly Bires and Kevin Harvick completed the top ten while championship leader Carl Edwards, who could have clinched the title on Friday, was among a long list of drivers who failed to make it to the chequered flag after he was swept up in a crash that also involved Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth.
Despite Edwards' retirement he still leads David Reutimann by 634 points with four races to go.
