Ron Hornaday has clinched the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series title following a dramatic season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday night.
Hornaday came into the season ending Ford 200 trailing Mike Skinner by 29 points but wound up taking the title with a seventh place finish after Skinner lost more than ten laps fixing a broken wheel.
The championship is the third for Hornaday, who also won the NCTS title in 1996 and 1998 and comes after a year in which the points lead almost continually swayed back and forth between Hornaday and Skinner.
Skinner went into Friday's event in control of the championship but saw his chances disappear when his left rear wheel suddenly parted company. Although Skinner's team were able to repair the offending item he was only able to finish 35th in a race that saw only one truck, that of Jacques Villeneuve, fail to finish.
Johnny Benson emerged as the winner in a finish that nicely encapsulates what has Truck season filled with thrills, spills and crazy finishes. Benson passed Kyle Busch on the final lap for his fourth win of the season and finishes third in the overall championship while Hornaday, who also has four wins, finishes 54 points ahead of Skinner at the end of the 25 race season.
