Johnson's best lap prior to his crash was still good enough for second fastest time in the session with fellow Hendrick driver Casey Mears third quickest and the Gillett-Evernham Dodge of Kasey Kahne fourth. Bill Elliott's best time pre-crash remained good for fifth place and the best of the Ford contingent while Jeff Gordon was sixth.

Seventh was the best of the Toyota's in the form of the #96 Hall of Fame entry driven by JJ Yeley followed by the BDR Camry of Dave Blaney, the aforementioned Busch and David Gilliland to complete the top ten.

Stewart, whose team will try and repair his primary car for Saturday night's race, was 18th fastest.
