Last year's Daytona 500 polesitter David Gilliland was 17th fastest with Dario Franchitti 19th for Chip Ganassi Racing. Juan Montoya was 21st, AJ Allmendinger 22nd, defending Daytona champ Kevin Harvick 33rd and Sam Hornish Jr 36th. Jimmie Johnson, who was fastest in first practice, chose not to risk his engine and sat out the session, as did Jacques Villeneuve.
