NASCAR looking at more weather heartache but hopeful of getting Auto Club 500 run on Sunday.
After one of the wettest weekends on record the start of Sunday's Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup race has been delayed by at least two hours as NASCAR tries to catch a break with the weather.
Sunday at the two-mile Auto Club Speedway dawned in much the same way as Friday and Saturday; dull, grey and with moisture in the air. Faced with the unenviable task of trying to get the 500 mile Cup race and the 300 mile Nationwide Series race in on the same day a mid morning shower did little to encourage the drivers, fans and race organisers.
However by midday local time, one hour before the scheduled start time, the rains stopped and track drying efforts began in earnest. Thankfully the bad weather has continued to stay away and although the scheduled start time came and went NASCAR are confident of at least getting in 50 per cent of the race distance on Sunday, which would make the race official.
One serious problem facing the organisers, besides the fact that the overall weather forecast for Sunday is for more rain, are the seams in the asphalt, which have continued to ‘weep' throughout the weekend even when the rains have relented.
