Double defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson is in line to make another career milestone this weekend in Las Vegas as he goes in search of a fourth consecutive victory in ‘Sin City.'
Johnson has taken the chequered flag first in each of the last three UAW-Dodge 400's at the remodelled 1.5-mile oval and a fourth straight win on Sunday would see him join his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and mentor Jeff Gordon as one of the few drivers to win four consecutive races at any NASCAR venue.
Gordon won four straight Southern 500's at Darlington between 1995 and 1998 and also won four consecutive spring races at the Bristol Motor Speedway while Johnson has already tallied up four straight wins at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, but split over two years (2004-2005).
“It would be great to get that fourth win, but we won't approach this weekend any differently than we would at a track where we've never won,” says Johnson, who has never finished lower than 16th in six starts at the Vegas oval. “We go into every weekend hoping to win, but so does every other team out there.
“I have every confidence in the equipment and the crew to get the job done, but anyone who's ever been to Vegas will tell you you've got to have some luck on your side, too. If you've ever watched a poker tournament on TV, you know even the most experienced players can get beat. We won't take anything for granted.”
