Kasey Kahne started the UAW-Dodge 400 weekend by scraping the turn four wall in his #9 Gillett-Evernham Motorsports Dodge but ended the practice segment of the event top of the speed charts with his famous red Budweiser livery.
Kahne led California winner Carl Edwards in another incident packed session around the variable banked 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway that saw Clint Bowyer join the growing list of drivers who will be racing their back-up cars on Sunday.
Kahne, Edwards, DEI's Paul Menard and Hendrick Motorsports duo Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson comprised the top five in Happy Hour with Dale Earnhardt Jr, David Reutimann, Greg Biffle, a pre-crash Bowyer and Dave Blaney completing the top ten.
However the car that Bowyer set ninth fastest time with will play no further part in this weekend's proceedings after Bowyer spun coming off turn two and clipped Kyle Petty before hitting the inside wall with sufficient force to render it inoperable for Sunday's race. Bowyer now joins Bobby Labonte, Juan Montoya and several others in their back-up cars on Sunday.
Further down the timesheets Las Vegas natives Kurt Busch and polesitter Kyle Busch were 15th and 29th fastest respectively with Saturday morning practice leader Matt Kenseth 17th. Sam Hornish Jr was an encouraging 21st fastest with Montoya 25th, Tony Stewart a lowly 33rd, Patrick Carpentier 39th and Dario Franchitti 40th.
