The final three places on the grid went to Ken Schrader, Joe Nemechek and AJ Allmendinger's replacement Mike Skinner, who was only given a place on the grid when Bill Elliott, who would have been entitled to a Past Champions provisional, chose to skip this event in favour of the Martinsville meeting next weekend.

With the demise of the #27 Bill Davis Racing team and the non appearance of the #08 E&M Motorsports outfit just three cars were sent home early, the first of which being the #21 Wood Brothers Ford originally intended to have Elliott and the controls but which was practiced by veteran Jeff Green. John Andretti and Patrick Carpentier were the two other unlucky ones with Carpentier now having missed three of the five races this year, two due to qualifying being rained off.
