Penske driver fastest out of the blocks in Phoenix after quick turnaround from Texas.

After missing the cut last weekend Franchitti knows he has to make the show this time out if he is to stay in contention for a place in the top 35 in points and with only 45 entries fighting for 43 starting places this weekend a second successive DNQ is simply not an option for the Chip Ganassi driver.

Further down the list Dale Earnhardt Jr was 15th fastest with Patrick Carpentier 21st, points leader Jeff Burton 32nd, rookie Michael McDowell 33rd and fully up to speed after his Texas accident, series returnee Johnny Sauter 36th, Juan Montoya 37th and Sam Hornish Jr 40th.
