Home Depot to step aside for three races in 2008 as Subway backs ‘Smoke.'

Furthering its relationship with Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing, Subway Restaurants will serve as primary sponsor of the #20 Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for three races in 2008 starting this weekend at the Phoenix International Raceway.

This marks the first time in ten years that a company other than Home Depot will provide primary backing to Stewart's #20 car.

In addition to this weekend's race in Phoenix Subway will also sponsor Stewart in the Labour Day weekend race in California and in the October race at Talladega.

“We are glad to extend our relationship with Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing to include our primary paint scheme on the #20 car. We appreciate that Home Depot is making it available to us for these races,” said Tony Pace, chief marketing officer of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust. “Tony is a Subway customer, and he embodies the true spirit of our brand.”

“We're proud to have Subway as a partner with Joe Gibbs Racing, and it's great to see them become even more involved with racing and our team,” said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing. “Just as Home Depot has done a really good job of activating its sponsorship over the years, Subway is doing an equally good job of using racing to market its line of fresh fit or better-for-you meals. We take a lot of pride in being their representatives in NASCAR.”

“Tony Stewart and Subway already had a successful partnership,” said John Ross, vice president of advertising for The Home Depot. “So when Joe Gibbs Racing presented us with this opportunity, we thought it was a natural fit and a great way for Subway to increase its presence in the racing community by building on this existing relationship.”
