After the rain debacles in California and Las Vegas the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has been fairly lucky through the spring months although that luck ran out on Friday at the Michigan International Speedway.
With a large band of rain surrounding the Michigan and general Midwest area the 45 entered teams were prevented from taking to the two-mile D-shaped Michigan oval for their Coors Light Pole Qualifying session, forcing NASCAR to set the grid for Sunday's Lifelock 400 on current owner points.
That handed top spot to current championship leader Kyle Busch, who finished 43rd and last at Pocono one week ago, with Jeff Burton alongside him on the front row and Dale Earnhardt Jr and Carl Edwards on row two.
Busch's Joe Gibbs teammate Denny Hamlin will start fifth with Jimmie Johnson, who led the only practice session of the day in his Hendrick Chevrolet, in sixth.
Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart, the other drivers currently qualified for the Chase for the Championship, completed the top 12 positions on the grid with Elliott Sadler and Robby Gordon, second and third fastest in practice, set to start 27th and 30th respectively.
With Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott claiming Past Champions provisionals, Jason Leffler and Tony Raines were the two drivers who missed out.
