I also need to put in a big word for my new co-driver on the event, Gareth Roberts. He did Wales Rally GB last year and has been competing in Stars of the Future for a while. I was really impressed with him. He did a very good job and it’s a credit to him we got the result. As we all know it’s a team sport at the end of the day, so we owe a lot to Gareth.
Unfortunately we found out afterwards we had just missed out on the Pirelli Star Driver Award. If I had pushed harder towards the end maybe we would have been included in the selection… We will have to go maximum attack on every stage on the next event to make sure we get the award there!
It was still a really good result though, and gave us a hat trick of class wins on the rally. We were well-chuffed with that. It has kick-started our championship again after the disappointing start we had on the Pirelli when we encountered a lot of problems. We are second in the championship now and need to build on that.
It will be good to get some time in the car on the Rally of the Midlands this weekend before we go to the Isle of Man again. That’s what we are concentrating on. We won the class on it last year, and although Justin Dale blew his engine there were quite a few other cars in the class too. To win on my first trip to the Isle of Man was a good result, and we will hopefully get another class victory this year as well.
I’ll keep you posted as to how we go.
Speak soon,
Matt
