Wyn Humphreys currently leads the race for the 2007 Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship - 2 points up on Guy Wilks and 4 points up on Mark Higgins.
Crash.net Radio caught up with Wyn last week, prior to the start of the second half of the BRC season and chatted to him about his year to date...
Crash.net:
Wyn, you are a new comer to the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship this year - yet here you are three events in and you are leading the drivers’ championship. You must be delighted?
Wyn Humphreys:
We are over the moon – if you had told us in January that we would be leading after three events, I wouldn’t have believed you. It is due to our consistency – we have managed the pace quite well. It was a new thing for us this year to come into the championship and I don’t think we need to push as hard as we can. We just need to get to the end and keep getting the points and experience.
Crash.net:
How hard have you found it since stepping up?
WH:
It has been a big challenge. I didn’t know what the pace was like because obviously it is my first year and so when we went to the Pirelli and finished fourth and found that quite comfortable that was good. It was the first time for me and Ally [Mackay - my co-driver] to do our own notes as well and that was another challenge for us. But we have gelled together and just got on with the job.
Crash.net:
You are in the same Stobart TEG Sport team as Mark Higgins – he has a brilliant record in the BRC and lots of other achievements outside the BRC too. How much has that been a help – and a hindrance for you?
WH:
I don’t know about a hindrance. He has been a help. He has got so much knowledge and experience - you can’t beat that. He made a bit of a mistake on the last one [the Rally Isle of Man] - going on slick tyres when it started to rain, it was not his fault, we did the same, but we backed off, but with his level of competitiveness I don’t think he wanted to back off and he just slipped off the road unfortunately. He is a big help to the team though and he is a big help with the development of the car with TEG Sport too, which should help us in 2008 as well.
Crash.net:
Does he give you any sort of tips in terms of set-up or do you just go your own way?
