Q&A: Wyn Humphreys - EXCLUSIVE.

Wednesday, 15th August 2007

Wyn Humphreys speaks exclusively to Crash.net Radio's Rob Wilkins.

We want to raise our game now a little bit for the rest of the year - but we are not going to push too hard, as consistency has got us to where we are now. We have done 18 events in the TEG Sport car and finished all 18 of them and so we have got to keep that going.

Crash.net:
Can you take the BRC title this year do you think? Is that a realistic objective?

WH:
It is not something we looked at before the season began - but where we are now, when you are leading, you never want to go backwards. Overall though, it will be harder to stay there than it was to get there.

Crash.net:
There’s been a fresh outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in the UK. How worried are you about this and the impact it might have on rallying in general - especially after it devastated the sport in 2001?

WH:
I think it affected the whole country in a big way in 2001 - but they [the government and so on] seem to have it under control at the minute and so it shouldn’t affect the rallying. If they have to stop the rallying though, rather than everybody else losing out and everything else, who cares really? We have got to look after the country - not just the need to get out and do rallying. There are more important things than that.

Crash.net:
Do you keep an eye on the WRC - and what do you think of it?

WH:
It is all exciting this year with [Marcus] Gronholm leading - and [Sebastien] Loeb is not quite getting it all his own way, as he usually does. It looks like it is going to stay interesting right to the end of the year and everybody has there eye on the WRC at the moment to see what happens on the next round.

Crash.net:
Going back to something you said at the start. You said you have had to learn to do your own notes this season. How tough has that been?

WH:
It has been alright. I have had a few tips from Phil Pugh, Guy Wilks’ co-driver, who lives about 4 miles away from me - and that is quite handy as well. We have changed our notes on every event so far just to fine tune them and now we have got the notes that we will use for the rest of the year. If there is anything that changes, like our pace going up, then we will just amend the notes for that.

Crash.net:
There are some big names in the BRC – Wilks, Higgins, Evans and so on. What is it like competing against them?

WH:
It is nice. They are people I use to go out and watch - and admire driving. Now to be competing against them and to be leading them at this minute is fantastic. We didn’t expect to be this high up. I know we have done it through consistency - but that is what you have got to do, you must get to the end of the rallies.
