GE:
They are good, especially when it is so relaxed. There is no pressure. Being amongst friends and being amongst genuine enthusiasts, it is great.
Crash.net:
Turning to the BRC, the first two events this season have been a bit tough for you, but the last two have been much better and you have taken two runners-up spots.
GE:
Yeah, the first two rounds were very disappointing, because we were running second and leading the other one. It was very valuable points lost and it has dictated really the way we do the rest of the season because we didn’t have anything on the scoreboard. We had to be a bit conservative after those in order to finish. But as you say we have had two second places now, two good results and it has been encouraging to be able to mix it properly with Mark Higgins and Guy Wilks, which in my opinion, are still the two fastest drivers’ in Britain at the moment.
Crash.net:
You have still got a chance of taking the title though - at least mathematically speaking?
GE:
It is possible and the way motorsport goes anything can happen. So you never say never until it is finished, but we have made work for ourselves.
Crash.net:
As you say, never say never and that was definitely the case on the Rally GB last year, which of course ultimately landed you in this works seat after you won the Mitsubishi Evo Challenge?
GE:
Absolutely, I must not forget that. I still have to pinch myself because I won the Evo championship last year and here I am in a fully paid works car all season. Furthermore and today by just being involved with the Group N programme I have managed to get my bum in a World Rally Car and have a play! What more can you ask? What a fantastic prize – I don’t know why everyone in rallying does go Evo championship!
[laughs]
Crash.net:
Just two events left now in the BRC and the next one is coming up very soon, the Rally Yorkshire. What are you hoping to do there?
GE:
Obviously I have got to aim for a win but there are two other people definitely that have different opinions on that one. I think it will be fast and furious. I have just had two days testing. We had a long test on gravel and we have done a few tweaks and tried a few different things and they seemed to work well. I am looking forward to the Trackrod. I have got an open mind on it.
Crash.net:
With the Trackrod being a one-day event and the following event, Rally GB, being a three-day affair, will that change your tactics?
GE:
I think it is sprints to the finish to be honest with you. I know, as you say Rally GB is three-days, but it is two events for us at the end of the day and we have to treat it like that. There are a lot of points available and I don’t think there will be any holding back. We will have to go flat-out.
