Gwyndaf Evans, the 2006 Evo Challenge winner, and a former British champion, had a continuation of his poor luck when transmission failure sidelined the experienced Welshman.
However, the rally wasn’t all about just these three talented drivers. David Higgins claimed the final podium position on the last round of the 2007 championship, and took sixth overall in the standings.
Ahead of him raged a battle royal between rookie Wyn Humphries and a vastly improved Rob Swann. Swann had been ahead of his fellow Subaru N12 pilot on Friday until a broken shaft on the last stage cost him dearly and dropped him behind the young upstart. The two continued their battle for the next two days and heading into the final two stages of the rally it looked like Swann would finish fourth, and with it take fourth overall in the championship. But two punctures in two stages dealt a blow to his plans and once again he would have to settle for finishing behind the 2006 ANCRO junior champion.
In the lesser classes problems for both Super 1600 drivers Darren Gass and Stefan Davis saw them running further down the order than expected. Davis headed into the last day only needing a finish to take the title but a puncture cost him time, he went OTL and the young Irishman, Gass, took the title.
A fierce battle raged for class honours in the renamed R2 class. Despite being the class of the field reigning Group N2 wheel drive champion Matt Beebe began the two events as underdog.
A holed fuel tank on Friday put Suzuki Swift pilot Lorna Smith on a back foot, with Beebe taking maximum points. He then looked set to dominate the class on Saturday, despite damper problems, when first the gearbox and then the alternator failed on him.
