This is one of the most exciting projects in which I have ever been involved and the prospect of taking two young drivers to the very top level in the sport is tremendous
Young drivers need a clear ladder to progress their careers and with the launch of GEMsport we are creating a structure aimed at building on the skills of the drivers and giving them the opportunity to realise their ambitions. If all goes well, then we hope to be in a position to help more drivers in the future.
We had a great launch at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham at the beginning of January and from that moment on it was a whirlwind to get everything in place to contest the first event, the Galway Rally in Ireland.
We conducted an extensive search to find the best co-drivers for the two lads and were seriously impressed by a number of potential candidates - it’s a shame we don’t have enough seats for everyone we spoke to.
And the support from within motorsport has been overwhelming with a real sense of enthusiasm for what we are doing and practical help from so many people who want to see GEMsport succeed.
We were delighted that so much hard work, investment and belief translated into those all important stage times on the Galway Rally.
Elfyn secured his first victory despite dreadful driving conditions and Meilyr put in a tremendous performance on his first event in the Fiesta finishing fourth.
The
hustings.com Fiestas didn’t miss a beat all weekend and we are now looking forward to the first gravel round - the Malcolm Wilson Stages in early March.
