Attention turns to the Rally of Wales.

Thursday, 2nd May 2002

With the first round of the all new Pirelli British Rally Championship now completed, attention turns to the next chapter in the season long story - the International Rally of Wales based in Wrexham.

He said: ''Running the rally in May has caused us some problems this year, particularly with the lambing taking place on the farms near to the route, and there are numerous sites where rare birds are nesting this year which has also caused us to change some of our original plans. As a result, we have to be careful where we channel our spectator traffic around the stages and we will be requesting the many thousands of rally fans who come to visit our rally to pay particular attention to our Spectator Information which will be published shortly, to make sure that we are welcomed back to the forests for next year.''

''This is the first time that we are running the rally without a main title sponsor as well, so it has been doubly hard on the organisational side this year, running with a limited budget after we lost a substantial amount after the cancellation of last year's rally due to foot and mouth. Despite the setbacks, we've laid on an excellent compact route for the rally, and I'm sure that the Rally of Wales will be an excellent event with some very high quality entries already received.''

Rally fans will also be able to get close to the drivers and cars when the teams start the rally from the Queens Square in the centre of Wrexham at 5pm on Saturday 18th of May, before returning to the grounds of NEWI for service on the cars from 8:15pm onwards.

The crews then have a crack of dawn start on Sunday morning as they contest the remainder of the rally stages before returning for the champagne ceremony in the Queens Square, Wrexham, at 5:30pm on Sunday 19th of May.
