In the meantime, Chris O'Connor, from Preston, also came to grief at Predannack. He and co-driver Mark Mason had put their Darrian GTR off the road and it had become beached on a ridge of soil. Unscathed, the pair opened their doors to get out, only to realise that the hot exhaust and brakes had set fire to the gorse underneath which, in turn, was starting to engulf the car. The flames were such that they were unable to move the car and, despite the best efforts of the marshals and other competing crews, it was completely destroyed in the blaze.
Rain or shine, the Tour of Cornwall is always a very tough challenge and, this year, thirty-three of the 59 starters were classified as finishers. These included the
Silverstone Rally School ‘Lady Quest' winner, Becky Kirvan who took 2nd in class in her MG ZR.
Since the Tour of Cornwall Rally first ran, it has raised over £90,000 for Cornwall Hospice Care and it is now the annual single highest benefactor. At the Awards Presentation for the 2007 event, a cheque for a further £2000 was presented to a representative of the Hospice.
