Britain's most exciting and innovative new rallying project, the Ginetta G20 GTR rally car, scored an emphatic class win Saturday on the World Construction North Humberside Rally, round three of the 2007 Tesco 99 Octane BTRDA 1400 rally series.
After reliability issues had hampered its previous outing on the Malcolm Wilson Rally, test driver Marcel Freling had been busy with some new developments and the main aim at the weekend was for a finish in order to get some testing miles under the belt. Not only did the team get the finish that they were seeking but Freling, co-driven by Karen Robinson, recorded the cars maiden class win as well, leading from the very first stage.
The team did have one comedy moment when the steering wheel came loose mid-stage, leaving Marcel trying to drive with one hand whilst re-tightening the nuts with the other hand, all the while driving at competitive speed.
“This result is pretty fantastic! We came here looking for a finish and ended up with some silverware! The car handled really well on the fast stuff through Langdale but there is still some room for improvement, but all I can say is we are all really chuffed with this result,” said Freling.
The result now moves the Ginetta duo into the class A5 lead in the championship standings and with more testing planned for the car ahead of its next rally, the Somerset Stages, towards the end of April, Freling is confident that there is more to come.
