Guy Wilks believes that he definitely needs to win the Rally Yorkshire on Saturday to get his bid to take the 2007 Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship title back on track.
Guy has won two of the four BRC events thus far this season, following convincingly wins on the Pirelli Rally and the Rally Isle of Man. Furthermore while he trails Mark Higgins, the current leader in the BRC standings by 18 points, with drivers' only counting five scores from seven - Rally GB counts as two events – it is all still very open.
Speaking ahead of the penultimate round in the BRC, Guy told
Crash.net Radio at the recent Castle Combe Rallyday that he will adapt a tactical approach to this weekend's one-day affair.
"We have got to win the Trackrod, but I think we have got to do it more by managing our speed as opposed to going out and trying to win it by a minute," he confirmed. "We have got to be clever and just do enough.
"We have to make sure we get those points in the bag and put the pressure back on everybody else.
"It is a bit of a level playing field at the moment, but we need to turn it in our favour before we go to Wales."
Asked about his season overall in the BRC, Wilks added that while it has been a bit 'up and down', his pace has been top notch and that is something that has really pleased him.
"There is one thing for sure, our pace has definitely been good. We know it is winning pace. On the first rally, the Pirelli, we won every stage, bar three, when we had a problem with third gear - basically we lost it. It has been fantastic," he continued.
"We are very grateful to Mitsubishi. They approached me in January and by the time it came round to March we had sorted something out.
"It is good mileage and I am trying to do a good job for them. They are desperate to win the manufacturers' in the British championship and I am desperate to win a championship as well. We have all got the same goals and we are working very hard towards it.
