Mitsubishi's Gwyndaf Evans has said that he will be competing very much for himself on the Wales Rally GB, the final round in the 2007 Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship.
Gwyndaf has had a bit of a tough season to date and has had more than his fair share of bad luck. Consequently the Welshman is four points behind his team-mate, Guy Wilks, in the race for the 2007 BRC crown and 20 points behind Mark Higgins, who leads.
With dropped scores to take into account though and the fact Rally GB is a double-header, the Welshman isn't out of it and with all his prior experience to draw on, he could yet spring a surprise.
"I have had a good time and at least I have still been pretty competitive against Mark and Guy all year and that has been pretty special," he told
Crash.net Radio earlier this month at the pre-Rally GB press day.
"We have been unfortunate. We have had retirements on three key events and that has probably cost us the championship lead.
"But at the end of the day we have still fought through. We have had some good performances and the championship is still not decided.
"We can still mathematically win it on Wales Rally GB. It is not finished until it is finished."
Pressed though on if team tactics might come into play on next week's event, something that could mean he would have to assist Wilks, Gwyndaf added that he will be there very much for himself.
"I think I have helped him enough as it is!" joked the 1996 British Rally champion.
"I am going there for Gwyndaf Evans now! I'm just going to focus on the job and see where we go from there.
"I've been pleased that I am still on the front-running pace - but there's no predictions."
As for what he will do beyond Rally GB, Evans is said to be considering his options, and while he doesn't look likely to do a full-season in 2008, it is clear he would like to be able to do some events.
