Neil Harrold and his cousin Dennis Sanford were more than happy with their performance on the recent Wyedean Forest Rally where they finished 40th overall, having been seeded car 90.
The pair, who aim to raise awareness for the MS Trust throughout 2008, suffered minor turbo problems before the rally had begun and were just hoping for a clean run as they strived to gain more experience of their Subaru.
Fortunately not only was the car faultless but also the only indiscretion by driver Harrold was a relatively minor one. The pair had caught another competitor near the end of stage two and Harrold missed his braking for a corner, causing the car to run wide, squashing a small sapling, before rejoining the road with relatively minor body damage.
"That poor little tree!" he joked. "We certainly had lady luck with us there. I ran wide, hit an earth bank which launched us over the tree, and whilst airborne I was concerned the car was going to roll. Apart from that, the car, was great today!"
"That was one of the best rallies I have ever done," Sanford added. "Both Neil and I were a bit rusty this morning and I got lost on the notes once or twice early on. And then Neil gave me a fright when he attacked that tree, on MY side of the car. But we beat our target and so we are both really happy!"
With a top 50 the intended target on such a competitive rally, the Sciotli Chocolates backed pair were very pleased to return to the finish at Chepstow Racecourse 40th overall and 13th in class.
Indeed the only problems encountered by the Space Creator supported Subaru GC8 were catching slower cars, dealing with ruts on some corners and having to contend with unseasonably bright sunlight.
