Neville Jones enjoyed a strong run on the Malcolm Wilson Rally last weekend when the Subaru Impreza pilot brought his Vulcan Fasteners-backed car home tenth in class after a fairly straight forward day.

After recent changes to his gearbox ECU Jones, co-driven by Ian Capewell, eased himself into the first two stages of this notoriously tricky event and began pushing once his confidence grew. Starting at Car 59 the Stone resident improved on both his times and seeding throughout the rally, which incorporated some of the famous stages from the past.

Strong times through Greystokes and Grizedale saw the Geoff Jones Motorsport-run Subaru return to Cockermouth at the end of seven gruelling stages in a very impressive 35th position, and taking tenth in the Production class.

“The car was brilliant today,” he reflected. “It took me a while to get used to the new ECU, but it wasn't helped by the fact that the roads were really slippery. Then in the afternoon Ian and I struggled a bit with the blinding sunlight but on the whole I am really happy with my performance this weekend.

“There are so many local people who contest this event that it would be impossible to run at their pace, so to finish tenth in class is better than we anticipated.”

Jones will now be back in action on the Red Dragon Rally in Mid Wales in a month's time as part of his Welsh National Championship campaign.
