Rallying cousins make it to the finish on North Humberside.

Neil Harrold and Dennis Sanford overcame a catalogue of problems on the recent North Humberside rally, including rolling their Space Creator-backed Subaru Impreza on the opening stage, to return to the finish in Whitby twelfth in class, picking up some useful points and signatures.

The day began with a 9 mile blast through the famous Langdale Forest. Immediately the pair found a good rhythm and despite the slippery conditions were having a strong run, but then about half way through the stage the brakes began to go soft. Harrold was able to drive around this problem but less than 2 miles from the end of the stage he lost the brakes completely, slid wide, clipped a bank and gently rolled over onto the roof!

Fortunately there were hordes of spectators around and they quickly rocked the car back onto its wheels and were soon on their way again - although the little ‘incident' had cost them well over 2 minutes.

A quick check of the car before the second stage satisfied both Harrold and Sanford that the damage was mainly cosmetic but even so they tackled the stage with caution, conscious of the brake problems.

A clear run restored their confidence and they pushed again on stage 3. After the 8 miles of Cropton the pair were twelfth fastest in class and next up was the mid day service.

The afternoon was a repeat of the morning stages and once again Langdale took a disliking to the enthusiastic cousins. The power steering bottle sprung a leak, possibly due to the earlier roll, but then leaking fluid dripping onto the turbo caused a drop in power which, coupled with the lack of assisted steering, caused more time loss.
