County Saab Scottish Rally Championship runner Steven Clark will embark on an epic journey which will test his driving and navigational skills to the full next month, when he takes on the daunting 5000-plus mile Adventurists' Africa Rally to Cameroon in aid of charity.
Around sixty teams from across the UK, Europe and the USA will be taking part. However, there is no set route, no back-up, and the cars used must be less than 1000cc.
As part of the fund-raising effort, Clark is offering a co-driving opportunity on the Merrick Forest Stages Rally in Newton Stewart in September - the penultimate round of the County Saab series.
"The way the Scottish Championship has worked out this year, I've had a different co-driver for every round – and I thought I'd continue that for the remainder of the season," he explained.
"So, for a minimum donation of £5, the person who can most accurately estimate the total mileage we'll clock up on our journey from Kinloss to Cameroon will get to sit beside me on the Merrick.
"It could be over 6000 miles if we arrive safely, or around 40 if we break down at Aviemore!"
Forres-based Glenburgie Cars donated Clark and co-drivr Rachel England a 660cc Daihatsu Mira - now affectionately nicknamed 'Daisy'.
The car will be their home for the 3 weeks they hope the journey to Cameroon will take them - from the official start in London's Hyde Park on July 18.
"We need to cover over 200 miles a day in Africa if we're to make it within the three weeks," continued Clark, who is a civil servant at RAF Kinloss in Morayshire. "I'd like to be home in time for the Speyside Rally - my local event - on Saturday August 9."
He and Rachael - a dental hygienist at RAF Lossiemouth - are fully aware of the dangers they face: "We're entirely on our own – we've no back up team," he added. "Rachael has competed on the Adventurists' Mongolian Rally, but I've no experience whatsoever of such an endurance event.
