"Apart from the obvious heat, there is the danger of road accidents - not just because of other drivers, but also the poor condition of the roads. Then there is the threat of kidnapping, and robbery, and the sheer effort required to get through the various border check-points where we've been advised that bribes are often the order of the day.
"Add to that the wildlife we're likely to encounter - snakes and scorpions among them – and it all adds up to quite a mix."
The pair will be spurred on by the knowledge that they are raising hundreds of pounds for the two causes supported by the Africa Rally: the Frank Water Projects, which funds world-wide clean water schemes, and Send a Cow.
"We hope to raise £1000 to be split equally between the two charities," Clark revealed, "and should we raise more, we'll nominate a third UK-based charity.
"I'm hoping that offering the chance to co-drive on the Merrick Rally will encourage people to support us rather than just asking for donations. I finished third on last year's event, so even if we can't repeat that result this year, someone will have a day they won't forget for a long time.
"There's no pressure - the winner can sit in silence and enjoy the experience of 100 + MPH on gravel roads, or they can attempt to read the route notes and see if they can keep up!"
