Telford based Nick Kenny marked his return to rallying after a six month break with a top five finish in his K-Motion backed Subaru Impreza on last weekends Mid Wales Stages, which were run around Llangurig.
The 20-year-old, who is co-driven by Welshpool resident George Gwynn, had not competed since the pair won the Telford Winter Stages in February. This lack of competitive action showed as Nick dropped time through the opening stage as he dusted off the cobwebs.
The pair picked up the pace from there on though and set a string of consistently quick times for the remainder of the rally, apart from on Stage 5, a 13 mile run through Myheryn, when the young duo had a bit of a moment and came to a halt after a half spin. The combined time loss from the opening stage and this half spin ensured that the Kenny and Gwynn would have to settle for fifth overall at the end of the rally.
We came here aiming for a top 5 and we achieved our target so we are pleased with the result, said Kenny. I expected to struggle on the opening few stages as I haven't had much chance to test the car, but was pleased to find a pace that I was comfortable with.
The engine felt a little down on power on some of the long straights so we are planning to send it away for a rebuild. Apart from that George and I thoroughly enjoyed our rally and are now looking forward to our next outing.
Kenny and Gwynn will return to action with their Geoff Jones Motorsport run Subaru Impreza N12 on the Coracle Stages at the end of July.
