GEMsport's Elfyn Evans reinforced his position at the top of the 2008 VK Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy UK series following what he admitted was a 'lucky' win on the Swansea Bay Clubman's Rally last weekend.
The 19-year-old eventually won by 4.1 seconds, but he only took the victory following the late decision by the stewards to scrub the times for SS3, which was cancelled due to a lay-out problem.
Elfyn and co-driver Gareth Roberts had lost more than 30 seconds to rival Kris Hall in Resolven after he went off the road in his hustings.com Fiesta, but in the end it was academic.
"We certainly ensured the GEMsport guys had plenty to do when we arrived at [the second] service," Elfyn conceded. "They did a great job to get us back out without penalty. We were very surprised to hear that the organisers had cancelled the third stage. It was a lucky win for us but a good result for the team nonetheless – and a fastest time on the final stage gave us our second win after the recent Severn Valley success."
Meilyr Evans meanwhile, who is contesting the series for the first time this year, also scored useful points in the sister car. He finished fifth overall after a steady run.
Elfyn now enjoys a 26 point lead in the FSTUK championship standings, 98 points versus the 72 notched up by his closest rival, Max Utting. Meilyr is fourth in the standings with 64 points.
The GEMsport team now heads back to Ireland next month for the Ulster Rally and the Cork 20 in September before a return to the gravel in October for the McRae Stages in Scotland.
