After the visit to legendary Monaco, the World Series by Renault drivers head towards Spain - and the relatively new venue of Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo - for the third meeting of the year.
There have already been three different winners this season, with Enrico Toccacelo (Victory Engineering) and Robert Kubica (Epsilon Euskadi) triumphing at Zolder and Christian Montanari (Draco Multiracing USA) coming out on top of the sole race in Monaco. Now the series' three Spanish drivers – Adrian Valles, Felix Porteiro and Celso Miguez – hope to add their name to the list on home territory.
For Valles (Pons Racing) and Porteiro (Epsilon Euskadi), the fiesta started last Sunday with an exhibition of their cars at Valencia’s City of Art and Science, as part of the Spanish Day of Sport, and as a precursor to the series' return to Spain for the first race on the new Bilbao street circuit in July.
Pons Racing and Epsilon Euskadi, from Catalonia and the Basque country respectively, are the two teams that have been fighting it out for top billing since the start of the season. They will both be keen to do well in front of the partisan home crowd, although Pons may just shade the additional support due to its line-up of two Iberian drivers.
Originally from Teulada, around sixty miles from Valencia, Valles will be welcomed like a local. Boosted by his podium finish in Monaco, he will be determined to keep his good run going, while team-mate Miguez will be looking to score his first points of the season.
The ambitions of Epsilon Euskadi, the leader in both the team and drivers' standings with
Robert Kubica, also remain high. The Polish driver, a winner at Zolder, will be looking to confirm his position as best in class but, having twice got into the points, team-mate Porteiro would like to go one step further and climb onto the podium this weekend.
