In five races so far this season, five different drivers have enjoyed a taste of victory in the World Series by Renault, but only one of that quintet will be among the five to watch this weekend as the series resumes on the reprofiled Bugatti circuit at Le Mans.
After a month's break, the championship's 15 teams will have plenty to keep them busy over the coming weeks, with Le Mans being immediately followed by the new Bilbao street circuit next weekend, but all eyes will be on the centre of France, with the five French drivers determined to show off their talent on home soil.
Third in the overall standings, Tristan Gommendy is the only one with a win to his name so far, the Parisian, who has always been very quick, finally tasting success in Valencia. Joining Gommendy on the podium in Spain was Eric Salignon, who finished the race in thundering style, and proving that he has the potential to win, even if his current place in the overall standings does not reflect that after failing to score in four of the five races.
In contrast, Damien Pasini, Salignon's Cram Competition team-mate, has been more consistent, and is getting ever closer to a podium finish. The series two recruits from the two-litre Formula Renault category - Simon Pagenaud and Patrick Pilet - may have less experience to call on than their fellow countrymen, but are both determined and consistent, each with four points finishes in five races. On a circuit which they know like the back of their hand, they will be a factor for a podium spot.
However, it is not only the French drivers who will be on home ground this weekend, as the DAMS team is based only a few kilometres away from the Bugatti circuit, and will use its expert knowledge of the track to the advantage of both Alx Danielsson and Raffaele Giammaria, the Italian remaining onboard for a second successive weekend having been drafted in for the suspended Pastor Maldonado.
