Another race weekend and another new country! I arrived in Turkey yesterday ahead of this weekend's third round of the World Series by Renault and, having never been here before, it's always exciting to try and get a glimpse of new surroundings - something I experienced quite a bit over the winter racing for A1 Team Great Britain.
I don't mind travelling, and usually occupy myself on flights with music or video games. The unfortunate thing is that, although we get to go to all these different places, we never really get to see that much of them. All you usually get to see are the airports, your hotel and the race track. Occasionally, you can grab an opportunity to get out and see a little more of the city you're staying in - I got to do this in Monaco a couple of weeks back and I'm really glad I did. If you can get out, it can be quite good for
a getting a feel for the place, so you can decide if you ever want to come back on a holiday!
We're back to a normal double-header format in Turkey, with qualifying and a race on Saturday, and the same again on Sunday. I want to be up there this weekend, with a front row start and a shot at a podium finish. You always want to go for the win and, so far, I've just got a pair of seventh place finishes from Zolder and Monaco. The points are handy, but we need to keep our heads down and keep working away to get up to where we want to be - at the sharp end of the grid.
Istanbul Park's a proper race track and we were quick last time we tested at a similar circuit - Germany's Nurburgring. I think the way the car was set up back then in pre-season testing should give us a good base from which to start when we go testing on Thursday prior to the weekend's races.
