“After starting from eighth, I really didn't think I was going to make it onto the podium," Pic said later, "My main goal was not to make any mistakes, as I was a bit wayward out there yesterday. I managed to settle down into a good pace and, when I closed back up to di Sabatino, I only had two more seconds of 'push to pass', so I really had to use them as best I could.”
Out front, meanwhile, van der Garde came under some late pressure from Barba, but the Spaniard admitted that 'although I was pushing as hard as I could, it was impossible to get past him' and the Dutchman duly took his second victory of the weekend, confirming him as a man to look out for this season.
"It was much more difficult out there today, and that was partly my own fault, as I flat-spotted my tyres from the restart," van der Garde admitted, "My car wasn't handling that well as a result.
"But it's still been a dream weekend for me. I owe a lot to my team, P1 Motorsport, as everyone has worked enormously hard to get to where we are today. We'll have to confirm it was no fluke in Spa.”
Salvador Duran was later assesed a 25-second penalty for an incident during the race, dropping him to 14th overall. Aleix Alcaraz duly moves up to inherit the Mexican's ninth spot, with di Sabatino claiming the final point.
