Bonanomi was next to take a turn at the top of the timesheets, improving the mark set by van der Garde in the morning, but, after a quiet start to the session, as he focused on improving the handling of his car, the Dutchman took back the lead with a new best time of 2min 02.886secs.
As he had before lunch, van der Garde timed his run to perfection, lowering the target just before the heavens opened again. The rain interrupted everyone's work with an hour left on the clock, just as several drivers were getting ready to fit new tyres, and allowed van der Garde to claim another session.
"It was a good time, quicker than last year's pole position," the championship leader enthused, "but there's another hour-and-a-half of collective testing tomorrow, which leaves everyone plenty of time to improve. I am around 200km from home here, so this is almost like a home race for me, but I hope things will go as well as in Monza."
Bonanomi remained second fastest on the day, ahead of Interwetten's Salvador Duran, Carlin's Robert Wickens and Marcos Martinez of Pons Racing. Tech 1 duo Julien Jousse and Charles Pic both featured in the top ten, taking seventh and eighth respectively, while Pasquale di Sabatino, who ran well in race at Monza, was ninth. Julian Theobald, who continues with Fortec this weekend, brought up the rear of the 26-car field.
