Carlin Motorsport added a further three podiums to their overall tally in the final round of the World Series by Renault at the Circuit de Catalunya as they brought a chequered season to a close.

The team, which dominated British Formula 3 this year, has shown consistency with the pairing of Mikhail Aleshin and Robert Wickens, but it took until the final round of the year to record their best overall result.

Race one was the highlight, with Aleshin finishing second and Wickens third, although the Russian had to overcome controversy when he was involved in a horrific collision with Marco Bonanomi, one that saw the Comtec driver clip Aleshin, launching him into a pit lane support pillar before barrel-rolling over the grass.

Nonetheless, the result stood with Aleshin, who was leading at the time, going on to record his seventh top five finish in the process. Wickens, meanwhile, followed up his podium in race one with another in the second event, although the Canadian was frustrated with his tenth place qualifying position.

“It was a good result today, but I wasn't very pleased with qualifying yesterday; we had better pace than our qualifying performance suggested, which I think we proved in the race. I'm disappointed that we weren't on the podium more times this season, but circumstances and luck seemed to go against us on a number of occasions. I'm happy to have got two podiums; it's a good result for the team.”

Leaving Aleshin and Wickens fifth and 12th in the overall standings, team principal Trevor Carlin was satisfied to end the season well.

“To get three podiums out of a possible four is a great result at the final round of the season. Robert put in some stunning laps after his pit stop which is why he finished on the podium; he drove a great race today. Mikhail was unlucky to be hit by traffic on his out laps, and had to complete a drive-through penalty as well.
