Championship leader Brett Wykes had little competition in heat three, winning by more than three seconds after leading virtually the entire 12 laps from the second row of the grid. Johnson and polesitter Jake Dennis completed the top three with Dennis particularly disappointed after watching his title rival maintain a steady lead.
Wykes and Truelove, the two ‘form men’ of the day thus far, found themselves drawn against one another in heat four although eighth place starter Hazz had a distinct advantage over 21st place starter Brett to begin with. That advantage didn’t last for long though as Wykes tore through the field to snatch the win from Truelove by seventh tenths. Like in the opening heat Truelove had Byrne acting as his rear gunner and between them the top three pulled a sizable gap on the rest of the pack.
Alfonso Skriczka was in the midst of very competitive day and added to his earlier fifth place result (heat one) with a fine run to fourth, as did Millar who tenaciously battled for the lead before dropping to a still-excellent sixth at the flag.
The biggest controversy of the day took place on the penultimate lap of heat five as Jacob Stilp nudged leader Steven Handford into a spin at the final hairpin. Although he would take the chequered flag first, Stilp was excluded and would miss the remainder of the meeting.
Stilp’s exit handed victory to Dalgleish from last place starter Skriczka, Julian Davies and the inspired Millar with Handford left to contemplate what might have been in 17th position.
Wykes’ bid for a third victory boiled down to a gripping tussle with Albon in the final heat with Johnson, Dalton and Irishman Charlie Eastwood all in the picture too. Wykes led until the final lap when Albon snuck through to deny the championship leader a perfect score and with the first five finishers all within seventh tenths of the winner it was perhaps the best race of the day.
