Race Reports: Sunday 17th June Larkhall.

Thursday, 21st June 2007

Five weeks on from the washout at Shenington the BRDC Stars of Tomorrow Karting Championship roared back into life at the Summerlee International Raceway in Larkhall with the series enjoying considerably better raceday weather on its annual trip north of the border.

The 16-lap final was one of the highlights of the day as Jenkins, Goff, Taylor and Godbehere pulled away from the chasing pack in the early stages and staged a truly intense fight for the victory. Jenkins led from Taylor in the early stages after another lightning fast start from Mackenzie but on lap seven Goff outbraked his foe going into turn seven. Four laps later Goff repeated the move to perfection on Jenkins to take the lead and even though Jenkins piled the pressure on for the rest of the race, Goff held firm for his first win of the season after a truly disastrous weekend at Kimbolton.

It was hard for Jenkins to be disappointed with second although after such a commanding performance throughout the day he will rue the fact that the only four laps of racing that he didn’t lead were the last four laps of the final. Taylor likewise can be happy with third, especially after he slipped back to fourth behind Godbehere on the penultimate lap.

Godbehere missed out on a podium finish thanks to Taylor’s late lunge and even though he was just 1.2-seconds behind Goff at the chequered flag, it was the one-tenth deficit to Taylor that was the biggest cause of frustration.

Behind the top four there was plenty of chopping and changing as Luke Wright drove from 17th on the grid to briefly take fifth place before his kart failed on him for the second time in three races. Like Wright, Jiri Foreman also laid claim to fifth spot in the early running before he too retired while Cooper’s day went from bad to worse when he spun and could only finish 15th.

Eventually fifth spot fell to Parker with Ashley Craig sixth; Hale seventh and Max McGuire, Ross Jenkins and Russell Danzey (from 19th on the grid) rounding out the top ten.

SUPER ICC

Despite measuring little more than 700 metres the gearbox version of the Summerlee Raceway, which cuts out the two infield hairpins to create a fast, undulating, seemingly never ending right hand turn into the turn-nine switchback section, is hugely popular with the drivers who revel in the frantically fast sub 30-second lap and the challenges it brings.
