Pippa Coleman produced a spellbinding performance in the closing two rounds of the BRDC Stars of Tomorrow championship, to end her season on a positive note with a double rostrum finish.
The 13-year-old entered the weekend at the Three Sisters circuit near Wigan on a high following a superb performance in the prestigious 0' Plate meeting at Whilton Mill where she had finished second, and at Wigan she made it clear she intended to one better. She would prove every bit as good as her word.
I felt confident going into the weekend after my performance in the 0' Plate, she acknowledged. I also won the Motors TV Challenge title at Three Sisters and have always gone well there in club meetings in the past.
In practice on the Friday we were the quickest out there and the kart felt really good both in the wet and the dry. When it rains there is always a bit of luck of the draw that comes into it too in the races, but we felt confident whatever the weather.
From pole position, the very first heat yielded the victory Pippa had promised after withstanding sustained pressure from rival Macaulay Walsh and she backed it up with a seventh position from virtually the back of the grid in heat two and second place, again from well down the order, in heat three.
The first heat was really good, the Mini Max front-runner enthused. I've been up there a lot lately but until then hadn't actually managed to get a win. I got away and then towards the end had to work to keep Macaulay behind me. There was a bit of pressure, but it gave me quite a lot of confidence to hold him off and get the win.
I got a good start in the other two heats too, and after that I just picked them off one-by-one.
The results left the Xtreme Racing star third on the grid for Saturday's final, and she would be in the same position when the chequered flag fell some 14 laps later, having waged a frantic race-long battle with Walsh, Lewis Hall and Joe Boullen. Though she led briefly for two laps, she would ultimately cede the runner-up spot to Hall on the very last tour.
