With team managers and officials locked in discussions, it was eventually decided to let the cars of Skaife, Besnard and Bright through, though the timing screens didn't keep up with this decision for some time.
There then followed the final laps to the chequered flag with Murph taking the win in the race, from his race-long shadow, Russell Ingall who took the round victory.
Ingall was a very happy man when set-upon by the Channel 10 cameras as he removed his helmet in the car. "S%@t, that's just been a long time coming," said Ingall, realising just too late that he was direct to live Australian TV.
It certainly had been an interesting race, and winner Greg Murphy called in the "Craziest of crazies."
In the pits during the race team boss Garry Rogers had a rather different take on the safety car and timing issues. "It's not good enough," he told the Channel 10 reporter, "it was quite obvious who was leading the race and who was at the back of the field," he mused.
