IRWIN Racing man just misses out on Indy points at Surfers.

Having been left to fly the flag for the Britek Motorsport squad following the withdrawal of Jason Bright, Alan Gurr was left just shy of a points finish in the final race of the weekend at Surfers Paradise – having been caught in the thick of the action in both race one and race two.

The IRWIN Racing driver saw his opening race of the weekend yield a 23rd place finish after he was forced to make a long pit-stop following contact with the wall but that was better than race two, where he was forced into retirement after he was turned around by Andrew Jones on the opening lap heading into turn three.

With the damage sustained in the incident leaving the team without any spares heading into the final race, Gurr was forced to drive a smart race while chaos reigned around him although he was just outside the points when the chequered flag fell in 16th place.

"Good to get home in the end," he reflected. "A few points would have been nice, but with the amount of carnage that we saw this weekend I feel like we got a good result. I actually tried the same strategy in race #2. Then it all cut loose with less than a lap gone.

"It was very important for everyone involved to finish the weekend. There were guys out there who simply threw away good results. I have never seen so many cars facing me! Fortunately we missed them all in that final race."

IRWIN Racing lead engineer Greg Foletta was pleased to finish the final race and look ahead to Bahrain, with the team having only a short time to get set for the trip to the Middle East.

"We have a straight car for Bahrain and that's very important," he said. "If you never believed in luck in motor sports, just have a look at all the damaged V8 Supercars this weekend. Some were self-inflicted, while others were wrong place at the wrong time.

"We rode our luck and certainly in the last race it went our way. Points really would have been a great reward, but we just missed out.
